Excursion to Suzdal

On June 26th we had ROOF’s traditional end-of-the-year excursion, completing the 2009-2010 academic year. We visited the ancient Vladimirskaya land – Suzdal, Kideksha and Bogolyubovo.

Students in SuzdalOur students are not afraid of any difficulties, such as a long journey, a burning sun and long walks. Our reward for all this was the beauty of historical sites we saw.

Suzdal amazed us by its ancient Russian antiquity, its cathedrals, monasteries and bell-ringing. We enjoyed miraculous fresco paintings at Preobrazhensky Cathedral of Spaso-Efimiev monastery. We’ll certainly never forget the singing of the Orthodox Men’s Choir.

We also managed to visit Kideksha, where Yury Dolgoruki built the fortress. Some fragments of the Fortress held out until now, as well as the Church of Boris and Gleb - the most ancient temple of Vladimirskaya land that wasn’t destroyed by multiple Horde raids, Polish-Lithuanian armies and Nizhegorodsky voevodas (commanders of an army). It’s hard to believe that the river Nerl, where we swam in Kideksha with a great pleasure, was a deep and shipping river once.

On our way back we saw another jewel of Russian Lands – the church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin upon Nerl River at Bopgolyubovo. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to visit the famous Svyato-Bogolyubsky women’s monastery. Still, this means that many of us will certainly come back there!  We all were really charmed by the beauty of Vladimirskaya land.

On our way back to Moscow, late in the evening, we made a short halt. It was only than we realized that because of a hard-driving programme of our excursion we didn’t even notice that we were hungry.

The final point of our trip was a ceremonial handing of traditional ROOF’s T-shirts and a collective photo made to remember this marvellous day.

The photos are here.
